Vestibulitis

Vestibulitis refers to neuroinflammation of the vulvar vestibule. It is a pathology that causes pain during intercourse, burning and redness located in the vestibule area. It's not contagious. In this article, we will delve into the symptoms of this pathology and discover the remedies to manage it.

Vulvar vestibulitis in women

Vulvar vestibulitis is inflammation of the mucous membrane of the vestibule of the vagina, i.e. the tissues located at the entrance to the vagina, inside the labia. This disorder affects women regardless of age.

Vulvar vestibulitis affects about 12/15% of women, but despite its frequency, there are still few doctors who recognize it. This entails for the woman having to undergo countless visits before arriving at the definitive diagnosis. The continuation of the symptoms without adequate treatment worsens the symptomatological picture, transforming it into a chronic one and making the healing times longer.

The causes that cause it can be multiple, and when the disorder becomes chronic - that is, permanent over time - they interact with each other.

At the origin of vulvar vestibulitis there is a hyperactivity of mast cells (cells that determine prolonged inflammatory states). Other causes that can contribute to the disorder are the contraction of the pelvic muscles and the hyperstimulation of the nerve endings responsible for the perception of pain.

The triggering factors can be of various types such as repeated vaginal inflammation (e.g. Candia Albicans or Gardnerella which are the main microorganisms that cause genital infections) or an inappropriate lifestyle (e.g. diet with excess sugar, yeasts and hygiene inadequate underwear with the use of aggressive detergents that do not respect the balance of the genital ecosystem). Even too tight clothing that creates microtraumas to the already irritated mucosa can be a trigger.

Vulvar vestibulitis symptoms

In vulvar vestibulitis, the main symptoms that characterize it and that always occur in the presence of this vaginal inflammation are reddened vulva, vulvar burning and pain during penetration. Inflammation of the vagina can also cause vaginal swelling in some cases.

Vulvar vestibulitis is a type of vulvodynia that causes genital and sexual pain in women. This discomfort, growing in recent years, is the main cause of pain in sexual intercourse.

Vulvar vestibulitis is also referred to as neuro-inflammatory vulvitis as it causes irritation/redness and hypersensitivity of the vaginal tissue. Sometimes, in the initial phase it results in a quite bearable annoyance, subsequently the inflammation tends to become chronic and is no longer bearable or manageable.

Vaginal dryness may also occur due to the reduction of usual vaginal lubrication due to inflammation.

In the presence of these symptoms, it is essential to consult a specialist doctor, without waiting long periods for the problem to appear, to identify the most appropriate and effective treatment.

During the diagnosis, the specialist can apply pressure or touch certain vestibular points to evaluate the sensitivity of the vaginal vestibule (Friedrich's test, is a test used to evaluate the sensitivity of the vaginal vestibule, through the use of a cotton swab, in patients with suspected vestibulodynia or vulvodynia).

Vulvar vestibulitis cure

Vaginal pain and vulvar burning must be treated through a multidisciplinary approach that involves the use of drugs to reduce pain, gels and creams to relieve the reddened and inflamed vagina, electrostimulation, and a correct lifestyle that does not favor 'occurring of other vaginal infections such as Candida.

In the context of curing vulvar vestibulitis, prevention remains - again, the most effective action. The woman must pay attention and not neglect the small inflammations, abstain from sexual intercourse until the inflammation has passed to avoid microtraumas of the mucosa, balance the diet and adjust the lifestyle, avoiding excessively sedentary or excessively stressful habits.

Specialists also recommend practicing exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and relax them when they are contracted. These exercises are taught to the woman by the physiotherapist who explains to the patient how to avoid the involuntary muscle contractions that cause pain and aggravate the problem.

Contacting a specialist who knows the patient's clinical history and experience will help to identify the most appropriate and effective treatment.

Vulvar vestibulitis natural cures

As mentioned above, the multidisciplinary approach is essential in the treatment of vestibulitis. Natural treatments include a correct lifestyle that avoids the use of aggressive soaps that alter the pH of the vaginal ecosystem, excessively tight-fitting clothing, and food containing simple sugars and/or yeasts.

The use of clothing that is not too tight to avoid microtraumas to the vaginal mucosa, and underwear made with natural and non-colored fabrics is advice that is always given to women with vulvar vestibulitis, and in general to women suffering from genital problems . It is necessary to pay attention to the quality of the fabrics to avoid creating further irritation. In fact, colored linen can release irritating substances not only during washing but also when worn; briefs with workmanship or in raw fabric can cause friction that exacerbates the irritation and the consequent burning / pain sensations.

DERMASILK pure silk fibroin underwear is indicated for this pathology, as it is transpiring and extremely delicate in contact with the most sensitive skins.

The effectiveness of DERMASILK underwear is immediate and the benefits are seen from the first two / three days of use.

Below are the results of the "Improved or Reimbursed" survey which demonstrate the reduction of symptoms in 100 women interviewed after 30 days of using DERMASILK briefs.

  • Women with recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis: after one month of continuous use of DERMASILK briefs, 87% of those concerned no longer had itching and 78% no longer had leucorrhoea.
  • Women with lichen sclerosus: after one month of continuous use of DERMASILK briefs, 92% of those concerned no longer had pain.
  • Women with vulvar dermatitis: after one month of continuous use of DERMASILK briefs, 67% of those concerned no longer felt itchy.

Other precautions to pay attention to and useful to put into practice are the use of cotton and hypoallergenic sanitary pads, and adequate intimate hygiene, which should not be confused with continuous and excessive washing of the genitals; washing morning and evening is enough; in the case of women, during the cycle it is recommended to wash at each change. What, then, does proper intimate hygiene consist of? You have to wash your private parts thoroughly. The direction of movement must be from the genitals towards the anus: reversing the direction of washing is wrong because the microorganisms are transported towards the genitals.

Activities that solicit the private parts (cycling, horse riding, stationary bikes...) should also be avoided.

Vestibulectomy / vulvar vestibuloplasty surgery can be resorted to only and exclusively in the most serious cases for which treatments are not effective.

In couples where the woman is affected by vulvar vestibulitis there is a significant alteration of balance, therefore once the medical problem has been resolved, psychological support may be necessary to regain balance and stability in the relationship.
